When Everyone Sounds Like an Expert: How Leaders Can Stand Out in the Age of AI

Almost overnight, AI erased a significant part of every leader’s value proposition.

And it’s on you to reposition yourself, reinstate your value, and make it known so you can remain relevant as a leader in the AI era.

Just a couple of years ago, before generative AI entered the corporate workforce, a sophisticated analysis signaled a leader’s ability to analyze complexity and distill information. A nuanced written recommendation gave insight into how a leader thinks, what they notice, and how they arrive at a conclusion. A compelling argument demonstrated your ability to evaluate an issue, take a position, and make a convincing case for a course of action.

Today, AI can do all of this for you in a fraction of the time.

That’s incredibly helpful, except…

…it robs you of one of your biggest differentiators.

Because with AI, even your new hire can now produce executive-level work products in seconds.

For experienced leaders, this can be quite unsettling. You’ve spent years developing the expertise required to produce work at this level. Now someone at the beginning of their career can create something that, at least on the surface, looks remarkably similar.

So what does that mean for your value as a leader? How do you stay relevant? How do you set yourself apart? And how do you make your unique value known?

These are questions I hear increasingly from leaders. And they point to something that has become central to great leadership in the AI era:

Your personal brand.

Your personal brand is how others describe the essence of who you are and how you operate. It reflects who you are as a person, how you think, make decisions, lead people, navigate difficult situations, and create impact. Over time, your behavior creates an impression of who you are, how you lead, and what others can expect from you.

Think of it as your reputation.

As AI makes sophisticated work products more accessible to everyone, your advantage increasingly lies in what is distinctly yours: your human perspective, the connection you create, the trust you build, and your ability to inspire others.

Unlike a work product that AI can generate in seconds, your personal brand is built over time. It reflects the accumulated evidence of your expertise and experience in combination with your humanness, emotional intelligence, and how you lead when things become difficult.

The more technology becomes part of how we work, the more important the human dimension of your personal brand becomes.

Today, leaders are asking their people to navigate almost continuous change. Change creates uncertainty, and uncertainty often triggers a threat response in employees’ brains, causing stress and resistance. Your ability to connect, build trust, understand what people need, and guide them through uncertainty is becoming increasingly important in today's rapidly changing landscape.

But AI is not only increasing the importance of your personal brand. It is also shaping it.

Used well, AI can strengthen your brand. It can help you challenge your thinking, identify blind spots, synthesize information, and communicate your ideas more clearly. It can help you express your expertise and perspective more effectively.

However, if AI increasingly does the thinking for you rather than with you, or if your AI-assisted communication projects qualities that people don’t experience when they interact with you in person, a gap begins to emerge that can quickly undermine your credibility and trust.

And that can have real consequences. Because your personal brand travels and shows up in rooms you’re not in. It influences what people trust you with. It impacts whether your name comes up for the next opportunity, whether you win a critical engagement, or whether you keep your seat at the table.

So, your challenge as a leader is to get clear on what is uniquely yours and intentionally create a personal brand that sets you apart and positions you for continued success.

A useful place to start is to ask yourself:

If you stripped away every report, presentation, memo, and email that AI can produce for you, what would people still know about who you are as a person, how you think, how you lead, and the value you bring?

Thanks for reading!
